Katrina Sawyer BA (Hons) Graphic Design 2020

Hi, I’m Katrina and I am a multidisciplinary graphic designer based in Manchester. I am an experimental designer who enjoys typography, branding, editorial design and data visualisation. I bring new innovative solutions to my work through a mixture of analogue and digital processes. My curiosity drives my practice forward, pushing me to question how design can address social, cultural and ethical issues.

Display Systems is a publication to celebrate the process and visual systems behind 8 display fonts inspired by the Manchester City Tower. Each font is created using its own analogue algorithm system, influenced by the architectural structures and details found on the building. The book outlines the research, analogue algorithm, specimen and application of each display font. The publication explains the relation between the City Tower and Manchester’s iconic modernist architecture, 1960s computer science and Harold Wilson’s political enthusiasm for technology. Programming details guide the reader through a binary number page system and text introduced by JavaScript code. 8 posters go alongside the book to celebrate the process behind each typeface, allowing the systems to become a source of inspiration for other designers and architects.
