Fine Art and Art History

BA (Hons) Fine Art and Art History is a distinctive course which offers students the opportunity to develop and expand fine art practice through a deep engagement with art historical knowledge and theoretical ideas. It is part of the Undergraduate Programmes in Art Theory and Practice, a jointly-taught group of courses which come together to form a close-knit, multidisciplinary environment in which students can develop into informed, critically capable art practitioners.

Lockdown happened just as our final year students were beginning their preparations for their final bodies of practice and formulating their plans for exhibition at our degree show. It’s hard to overstate its impact; at a stroke, they were denied their established ways of working, their usual forms of contact with supportive and critical peer groups, and the familiar environments of our studios and workshops. This cohort has had to be adaptable and resourceful in a way no other has, against a backdrop of flux and heightened anxiety. We are profoundly impressed and heartened by the degree to which they have risen to these challenges, as evidenced by the work and statements presented here.
