Evie Spicer BA (Hons) Photography 2020
Evie Spicer is a photographic artist whose practice explores the lived experience, investigating the relationship she has with her surroundings, to uncover how these relationships affect ourselves on both a personal and societal level. This introspective, dreamlike series, titled ‘Embedded’, is shaped by Celtic mythology and the narrative of the female as protector of the land. The subject matter exists within both manmade and natural native landscapes - spaces that we have imprinted upon, and which imprint upon us in return. By using her body as a tool to interact with space, she delves into the emotive power of the land.
The power dynamics between human and nature, and the viewer and viewed are continuously explored throughout this sequence. Moving cyclically, this powerplay is unresolved, leaving the audience to decipher it for themselves. Using a combination of staged, and candid imagery, this invokes a feeling of the uncanny, raising questions of the inconsistent reality that we live in.
