Jane Catterson BA (Hons) Graphic Design 2020

I’m Jane Catterson, a Belfast born creative, and I am an idiosyncratic designer and artist focused on conceptual publications, photography and art direction. I find myself drawn to darker, more experimental approaches to design and art direction, particularly through print. Ideas behind my work often stem from personal experiences, emotions and beliefs, whether that be examining human emotional experiences, the archaic abortion laws in Northern Ireland or my own identity.

‘Forgetting Myself’ is an emotional exploration of human guilty pleasures and escapism, in an effort to understand our desire for complete freedom and control. It is an A3 perfect bound publication printed on smooth white 135gsm paper. The cover is made of soft, upcycled leather paper and it contains self-directed
photography and interview style survey answers analysing people’s guilty pleasures
‘Forgetting Myself’ is also a tête-bêche publication, meaning two texts are bound together with one text rotated 180 degrees relative to the other. This allows there to be two front covers so that the viewer can decide which side they want to start at. When you reach the end of the first text the next one starts, flipped upside down. I have illustrated the publication as it would be been printed and viewed.
I am very interested in the experimental process of design creation and often enjoy the accidents that happen a long the way or the parts that don't make it to the final piece.
Women Across the Water is a data visualisation looking at abortion statistics within Northern Ireland and the comparison between them and the number of women travelling to the UK to receive the same medical treatment.

12 portraits= number of NI women receiving treatment in NI

1052 stitches= number of NI women travelling to GB for to receive treatment.
