Jessica Girling BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice 2020
Jessica is a specialised mixed-media knit designer, working in a wide array of materials to interior furnishing and installation focused outcomes. This material fluidity allows her to have an experimental practice, which focusses on playfulness and engaging our childlike curiosity to connect with vivid colour and form. Jessica’s work is designed to be both eye-catching and intriguing, drawing the user in to discover it through interaction, and often immerse them in their immediate environment. This immersive feeling is something that has been explored in much of Jessica’s work, looking at creating surrounding and comforting furniture which encases and protects the user.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, digitally visualising potential outcomes has become an essential part of Jessica’s practice, however these designs will come to fruition in the near future. With Jessica’s designs translating into unique interior furnishings as well as more sculptural outcomes, her future practice will be studio based, designing custom orders for clients and working on live briefs. Jessica is currently collaborating with 2 other designers to produce a large-scale commissioned wall feature using recycled aeroplane seat belts for Virgin Atlantic and Stac Architects, after winning the commission earlier in the year.
